‘The Nest’ is a church tower that supports a warm and approachable contemplation space, in the heart of Dundee, housing the ability to adapt and grow to its occupant’s needs.
Juhani Pallasmaa writes that “The nest protects and supports the body, but also centres and organises the occupant’s world: the world gathers and structures itself around the nest.” In much the same way, the tower has been developed to encompass a feeling of safety and familiarity. When entering ‘The Nest’, the atmosphere and lighting is immediately softened as the expressive brick work limits the amount of natural light in the space. Taking inspiration from the structural frame hidden within the church, the tower is supported by a recycled metal surround, juxtaposed by a visually soft brick façade which has been designed to portray similar patterns to a cable knit jumper and further the building’s warmth. Situated next to the Logie and St. John (Cross) Parish Church and standing in equal height with the existing church roof, The Nest appears unthreatening within its surroundings.
The space, taking its structural image and movement from industrial gas holders, can be increased by pushing out the interior walls. In doing this, the fabric becomes stretched and therefore lets more light into the room. This movement gives users the ability to choose between a dark and intimate space or a large, open area, allowing for the tower to support the user and form itself around their personal needs, establishing a unique experience with each induvial that enters ‘The Nest’.
