THROUGH THE CURTAIN

Taking the form of a modern transformation, “Through the Curtain” makes use of a mistreated and unloved social space situated on the North Side Fifth Floor of the Duncan of Jordanston College of Art and Design creating a bright and visually interesting alternative to the current space.

Using bright coloured frames, tactically positioned, the space has been manipulated to lead the visitor’s line of sight towards spaces expanding beyond the external walls, for example the often forgotten views of the Art School’s Grounds. These frames correspondingly work to soften the space creating a softer journey through the social environment. Adding to the design, the newly relaxed space entertains the furniture of Hans J. Wegner, specifically his CH07 Lounge Chair and CH008 Coffee Table allowing the space to be updated and rearranged to fit a variety of functions.

Featuring a double height installation, the resulting area is split down the middle by a series of large transparent curtains visually inspired by the work of Petra Blaisse. Falling just above head height these structures form inferred spaces, creating a sympathetic yet protective relationship similar to that felt when perched beneath a large oak tree. Placed upon large blue frames, these arrangements are strategically placed to allow for maximum use of the space and in turn allowing for a steady, uninterrupted flow of traffic through the atrium, yet upon further inspection they hold further significance.

Designed around Francis D.K Ching’s methodology behind the formation of a cube, shown in his book “Form, Space and Order”, as students and staff pass-through the space they will witness the form developing in a similar way to which students individually develop; building upon the foundations created by their time in the art school and as they look around them they will see a newly formed environment, in a different perspective; through the curtain.
